About Legal Representation
Q. Don’t I need a lawyer?
A. No, you don’t need a lawyer to represent you in Family Court. Anyone can represent themselves. We’re here to support and guide you through the process.
Q. Won’t I be at a disadvantage if I don’t have a lawyer?
A. Not at all! No one knows your case better than you. Many people have successfully represented themselves in Family Court. While lawyers can provide expertise, they aren’t always essential to achieving a positive outcome.
Q. I qualify for Legal Aid. Wouldn’t I be better off with a lawyer?
A. While Legal Aid can help make hiring a lawyer more affordable, there are limitations. Many Legal Aid lawyers are overworked and tend to prioritise private-paying clients. Additionally, in most Family Court cases, Legal Aid must be repaid. We offer an alternative by providing direct, practical support at a much lower cost.
About Family Court Advocates
Q. Are you lawyers?
A. No, we’re not lawyers, and we don’t claim to be.
Q. Can you represent me in court?
A. No, we can’t. Under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006, only registered lawyers are permitted to represent clients in court.
Q. What do you mean by an advocate?
A. An advocate is someone who supports and guides you through the Family Court process. We can:
Listen to your concerns and help you explore your options.
Provide information about your rights and assist with decision-making.
Help you understand the process and prepare for each step.
Direct you to useful resources or contact relevant people on your behalf.
Q. What can’t you do?
A. We can’t carry out any tasks considered “reserved areas of work” under the Lawyers and Conveyancers Act 2006. This includes acting as your legal representative in court or providing formal legal advice.
Our Services
Q. Can you help me understand the legal process?
A. Absolutely! We’ve been through the process ourselves, so we bring real-life experience and practical insights that go beyond what’s in a textbook.
Q. Can you review my documents and letters?
A. Yes, we can review your documents, provide constructive feedback, and suggest improvements.
Q. I already have a lawyer. Can you still help?
A. Yes, we can. A lawyer’s primary obligation is to the court, which may not always align with your priorities. We can work alongside your lawyer, helping you navigate decisions and reducing unnecessary communication, saving you time and money.
